The Squires

Squires owned most fishing villages in Lofoten. A squire was a landowner, he had fisherman’s cottages for rent, and he controlled the right to participate in the fishery. In StorvĂ„gan we find one of Lofoten’s oldest squires from 1815. In a period for almost a century here was a traditional fishing village with a lot of activity.
